What are the advantages of nitrogen tyre inflators?
- Prevents fluctuations in pressure since Nitrogen is dry air compared to normal
compressed air.
- Nitrogen is non-reactive. Preventing tire and rim from corrosion
- Maximizing your fuel economy and tire life.
First of all we have to know what is in natural air. Air is a mixture of gases which contains 78%nitrogen and 21% of oxygen and other 1% is a mixture of carbon dioxide, water vapor Argon etc.
If natural air consists of 78% of nitrogen why should we go for pure nitrogen?
Air is about 21% Oxygen. Even though it is a necessary, life supporting gas, it is really
a nasty, aggressive, corrosive gas that vigorously attacks the rubber molecule at very
low concentrations. It also degrades the expensive anti-oxidant and antiozonant
chemicals that manufacturers include in their highly secretive tire compound
formulations. Rubber-weakening oxidation reaction is rapid and aggressive.
How nitrogen is better than air?
Pure Nitrogen diffuses through rubber at a 30% slower rate than air; making it the
choice insofar as improved pressure maintenance is concerned. Nitrogen is 50% less
soluble in rubber than Oxygen. Studies done by Bridgestone/Firestone in passenger tires
showed that internal pressure loss rates were reduced 45%when using pure Nitrogen
inflation.
How much purity of nitrogen will help the tyre?
The scientific literature says to not let the tire go below 95% Nitrogen purity to get the
greatest benefit. This does not exclude the common sense probability that 100%purity
is better than 95%. However 100%Nitrogen purity is commercially impractical and in
fact cannot be scientifically established due to the natural variability from tire to tire.
For how long the tyre pressure will retain?
According to the sources tyres filled with nitrogen of 95% purity can last long their
pressure for 4-5 months.
Peer-reviewed studies reported by Dr. J. Baldwin of Ford Motor Company showed:
“The tires inflated with more than 95 percent Nitrogen do not appear to change very
much from the new tires even after 12 weeks in the oven, whereas the tires inflated
with the oxygenated media change dramatically, even after three weeks in the oven.”
Advantages of Nitrogen inflation
As the pressure will retain for longer time in the tire filled by nitrogen there by the cost
for filling the tires with normal air will come down and also with the correct pressure in
the tire leads to a good fuel economy (due to improper pressure maintains the fuel
consumption more) and the tire life will also increased with the help of nitrogen.
